Drawn to Moths pt. 1
Moths have been a huge influence on my work, their ethereal wings and ghostly movements make them one of my most enjoyable subjects, and my first ventures into surrealism.
My fisrt charcoal work was of moths, as was my first attempt at surrealism that was not trying to mimic the styled of another artist. They still hold such an appeal to me, and the fictional Actias purpurea-luna is the namesake of my studio, Purple Luna. Named for a purple moth, and not a purple moon.
The moth to the left is a small, matted piece rendered in charcoal on green tinted paper. It is currently one of my samples I take to the farmer's market.
Below is a fully charcoal rendering, "The Light Keepers," a piece now residing with an art collector.
