Nightime Stories Pt. 1

Some sketch work I'm doing for my submission to the Sketchbook Project 2011 Tour, these are all possible concepts for future paintings, and a chance to stretch my whimsy.

To quote their site:

Thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the country.

After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view.

Child of the Night

It seems I have chinchillas on the brain again. Not hard to believe as I hear mine running back and forth trying to solicit a raisin from me.

" Night in the Andes approaches, as the day creatures nestle into their dens, and the little things of the night come out to play."

Spirited and lovely nocturnal creatures, and always a pleasure to draw their fluffy, round forms.

Waiting for the Train

Inspired by the novel Night on the Galactic Railroad by Kenji Miyazawa, and the film adaptation.

This was a wonderfully enjoyable night scene to produce, and let me dip my toes into more illustrative work.

Did You Hear That?

"Did you hear that?" Mrs. Mouse lifted her head, knowing something is not quite right. The wood is quiet, the world is still. She needs to get home to her children, a long trip alone, and she is ready to face whatever has silenced the forest.

Semi-Realism

A commissioned chinchilla piece, done in memory of an ebony chinchilla named Dodger.

I'm setting into a clean coloring style, while still retaining some realism.

Mixed media on 4x6 paper.

Gone to The Birds

With the rise in bird art I've been doing, I felt compelled to post a few more. To the right are some cute cockatiels, my first time doing the species. They'll make handsome bookmarks, and I'll be selling them matted.

Below is a portrait of a very sweet budgie for someone I know.
Her beloved pet passed away young, the piece was done as a memorial
to her sweet little chick.

Illustration - The Night Parade

The Chinchillas march forth from the hills. To where, who knows. Why? It's a secret, a ritual, something special to them. The night parade marches on.

Calligraphy

Ahh, the sounds of spring...

While dealing with a fickle wrist, I picked up a new hobby. Should any of you be visiting the Fort Wayne Main St farmer's market, I'll be selling custom work at my table. The examples below were for a friend of mine.

Send in the Budgies!

Long time no post!

After adding a new addition to the family, Minion the budgie, you might say they've been on my mind a bit. So I took on doing a bit of work to draw these adorable creatures.

To the left are Starlight and Meteor, rendered in mixed media on a tiny 1.75x4 inch piece of paper.

And below is Caspir, and adorable blue and white budgie.

I still have a lot more to go, and a lot more art to put up!
